If you want to refresh your outdoor patio, a few simple additions can make a world of difference. I wanted our upstairs patio to be used more — cozier for morning coffee and more appealing to hang out on — and plants and textiles did the trick! Here’s how you can easily transform your patio into a stylish and inviting haven:
1. Embrace Greenery:
Bringing nature to a space is always a good idea. Start by incorporating plants of different sizes and varieties. Hanging planters can add vertical interest and draw the eye upward, while potted plants around seating areas create a lush atmosphere. I added mostly drought tolerant succulents for easy maintenance but still was able to incorporate color and different shapes and sizes. I used plantes up against the wall similar to these.
2. Create Zones with Rugs:
Just like indoors, rugs can define spaces and add warmth to your patio. I pushed my seating over to one side and anchored it with a rug. Choose outdoor rugs made from durable materials that can withstand the elements. Click here for our rug. A rug under a seating area or dining set instantly anchors the space and makes it feel more inviting. Consider textures and patterns that complement your overall decor theme.
3. Mix and Match Textiles:
Textiles such as cushions, throws, and outdoor curtains can elevate your patio’s comfort and style. I usually keep a blanket in my outdoor spaces for chilly evenings. Play with colors and patterns to add personality—mixing solids with stripes or florals can create a dynamic visual appeal. My new outdoor pillow line is launching soon here.
4. Focus on Functionality:
Think about how you use your patio space. If it’s primarily a dining area, ensure there’s ample seating and a table that accommodates your needs. For lounging areas, add comfortable seating options like lounge chairs or a cozy bench. Click here for our no fuss Adirondack chairs. Lighting is also key—consider string lights, lanterns, or solar-powered lamps to create ambiance and extend your patio’s usability into the evening. Click here for the shatterproof lights I used.
5. Personalize with Decor:
Small decorative accents can tie your patio’s look together. Once I pushed my seating area over to one side, I realized that a console table against the wall would look nice and would look beautiful with a bunch of my plants. Click here for the console table. Consider adding outdoor-safe artwork, lanterns, or decorative pots to further enhance the atmosphere.
